Humans are social animals and wanting to be part of a community where there\u2019s support and a feeling of shared responsibility for the well-being of others is almost an instinctive need.<\/p>\n<p>However, sometimes circumstances can make you feel like you\u2019re on the outside looking in. Perhaps you\u2019re newly single, missing a partner who has recently passed away, or living in a new and unfamiliar city or neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p>Those can certainly be challenging situations to face. Happily, there are simple ways to make yourself feel more a part of your community, to create a sense of community if you don\u2019t have one and to make where you live warm and welcoming for others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to feel connected and connect with others<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Step outside and say hello. Take a stroll after dinner and stop to have a short conversation with at least one person you meet along the way.<\/li>\n<li>Introduce yourself if you\u2019re new to the neighbourhood, and make a point of welcoming others as they move in.<\/li>\n<li>Check online to find out where the nearest blood donor clinic is to you, then recruit friends and neighbours to join you as you <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.foresters.com\/community\/its-in-you-to-give-save-lives-with-a-blood-donation\/\">give the gift of life<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Beautify neglected public spaces in your community by getting friends and neighbours to help you prep gardens or planters for summer beauty. Just be sure to check with your city or town first.<\/li>\n<li>Build a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.foresters.com\/community\/share-your-love-of-books-with-your-community\/\">Little Free Library<\/a> for your front yard and share your love of books with those around you.<\/li>\n<li>Support local shops whenever you can. It\u2019s important to prioritize independent stores (many of which are often owned and run by people living within your community) because it keeps those businesses healthy and thriving.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in community events. Check notice boards in your building, community center, or local coffee shop to find out about fun events in which you might want to participate.<\/li>\n<li>Support your child or grandchild\u2019s school. Go to bake sales, volunteer to help with clubs and go on field trips.<\/li>\n<li>Lend a hand with projects happening in your community, such as food or clothing drives or community gardens to help make food more accessible in your neighbourhood.<\/li>\n<li>Rally others in support of a good cause. Foresters Financial members can use a <a href=\"https:\/\/my.foresters.com\/en-gb\/activities\/community-volunteer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Foresters Community Volunteer grant<\/a> as seed money to organise a volunteer activity for a local charitable organisation. \u00a0Members can also help their community with a \u00a3200 <a href=\"https:\/\/my.foresters.com\/en-gb\/activities\/foresters-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Foresters Care grant<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Do more with Foresters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>You can help influence change at Foresters and in your community as a member leader, what Foresters refers to a Branch Councillor.
