Age is just a number

When you reach a certain age, it can be all too easy to assume that the old saying, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” is true.

But age is just a number.

Our brains actually thrive on learning new things, and they continue to change and develop over the course of our whole lives. In fact, when we’re in the process of learning new things, our brains are being rewired as cells send and receive information about the tasks we’re doing.1

So ability isn’t the issue, but making time for doing something new could be. You may have a busy life and feel responsible for looking after lots of other people, and as a result you may be at the bottom of your to-do list.

But that really needs to change. It’s critical to make time for what you want to do – because you’re important too, and not just for what you do for others.

Did you know that Julia Child published her first book at 49 and began her PBS cooking show at age 51, at 62, J.R.R. Tolkien published the first volume of his fantasy series, Lord of the Rings; and Harlon “Colonel” Sanders was 65 before he started his Kentucky Fried Chicken empire?

They knew the secret: it’s never too late to start something new, because learning and growing are possible – and feel amazing – at any age.
