The reality is that staying resilient in the face of economic uncertainty is critical for everyone these days. Right now, you might be actively searching for a job, exploring new career paths, thinking about a new role in your organization or how to make yourself even more indispensable in your current role. There are steps you can take to help you navigate these uncertain times and stay ahead of the game.
Focus on what you do best
Make sure you’re continuously developing your skills to make yourself even more marketable if you need—or decide—to make a change. Maybe there are courses you can take to expand your knowledge within your chosen field. Does your company offer employee training and development programs that you could explore? Would learning a new language, taking a public speaking course or getting a relevant certification help you? Explore your options and brush up your skills.
Build a solid network
Humans thrive on connection, and the business world is no exception. Look for ways to expand your professional network beyond your current circle. Try to connect with new people in your field, join industry-specific groups on LinkedIn and attend webinars and networking events. Demonstrate that you’re committed to your profession and interested in learning as much as possible from those around you.
Volunteering is also an excellent way to make connections and make a difference. Foresters members have a unique opportunity to participate in a variety of volunteer activities within their local communities.
Be open to change
Being resilient sometimes requires a willingness to explore new paths. It might be a new role within your organization or a new industry altogether. Accept that things may have to change, and your career future may look a little different than you’d planned—and that’s okay. Remember, the goal is to weather the uncertainty and secure a stable job.
Be proactive
It can happen, but the odds are that a great job isn’t going to just land in your lap. Reach out to the people in your network who might be able to help you find the perfect position, actively search for new roles and opportunities, contact potential employers and research the companies you’re interested in and the jobs you’d like to have so you’re always prepared to jump on any opportunities that come your way.
Look after yourself
Even good change can feel difficult, so make sure that you’re taking time to look after your physical and mental well-being during times of uncertainty and transition. Don’t put off necessary medical appointments, stay active to help manage your stress and physical health, eat healthy meals and get the rest your mind and body crave. You need energy and focus right now, and self-care is the way to ensure you have enough of both.
